Hip Health The Pelvis in the Spotlight as it is the FOUNDATION of your SPINE
Pelvic Stability, Freedom of Movement AND Hip Disassociation are paramount for longevity.
Many of our leg and trunk muscles attach to our pelvis. The pelvis can be the anchor, (i.e. a stable place from which to move) or the butterfly (i.e. a flighty and unstable structure that is impacted by ALL movements, whether intended for it or not) for the rest of the body.
With the amount of CHAIR sitting that we now do our hip muscles are wasting in ways that are leading to an upsurge in hip pain; bursitis’, tendinopathy and tendinosis.
Sounds rough! Luckily the main preventer for these is … you guessed it … Exercise! Yes, the stronger your hip muscles, especially your glutes, the less likely you are to suffer from these conditions.
Introducing your Glutes:
Glute Max: a VERY big muscle. It pushes us up and forward in what is called hip extension. (i.e. when your leg is behind your hips). Exercise e.g. Pelvic lifts.
Glute Medius (& Minimus): This is a side hip muscle that attaches from the top of your hip to leg. Glute Med connects to your ITB below, and your obliques above. It’s tone and ability to work is affect by these muscles. Exercise e.g. anything standing on 1 leg. With a STABLE pelvis.
The deep lateral hip rotators (Gemelli + Obturatri): Your secret weapon. 4x small muscles that connect your pelvic floor region to your thigh. When you want to change direction in walking these are the muscles that you want to be pulling your thigh and your pelvis together. Exercise e.g. clams.
Keep these strong & balanced to live a long and happy life doing the Hippy Hippy Shake.
